Biden Set To Host Angolan President At White House For Landmark Diplomatic Talks

President Joe Biden will host Angolan President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço at the White House on Thursday, November 30, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement on Sunday.

The meeting is poised to commemorate 30 years of diplomatic ties between the United States and Angola and is expected to delve into a broad spectrum of issues aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation.

One of the focal points of the discussions will be the exploration of avenues to bolster trade, investment, climate, and energy cooperation between the two nations, Jean-Pierre said in a statement, adding that President Biden and President Lourenço are set to engage in talks to advance collaborative efforts on the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGI) project in the Lobito Corridor.

The ambitious Lobito Corridor project, spearheaded by President Biden, aims to establish a crucial trade link connecting Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Zambia to global markets through the strategic Lobito port in Angola. The project carries significant economic implications, and the leaders will deliberate on strategies to propel its development forward, fostering increased connectivity and trade opportunities in the region.

The anticipated meeting builds upon the framework established during the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit, with a specific focus on how the United States and African nations can strengthen their partnership to collectively address regional and global challenges.

The White House emphasized a commitment to reinforcing collaboration with African nations, highlighting the importance of continued dialogue and joint efforts in navigating shared challenges.

As the leaders gather to mark the 30-year milestone of diplomatic relations, the discussions are expected to extend beyond bilateral cooperation to address the broader geopolitical landscape, with President Biden and President Lourenço seeking common ground on issues that impact both nations, demonstrating a commitment to working together to address the complexities of the modern world.
