The Africa Centre for Disease Control has called on African countries to create partnerships to manufacture vaccines that will make health systems resilient.
Africa CDC Director General Jean Kaseya says the continent needs to prepare for pandemic prevention and response.
Dr. Kaseya says local manufacturing of medical products will ensure strong institutions, skilled workforce and appropriate financial resources.
He says currently, only one percent of vaccines used on the Continent are manufactured in Africa.
Dr. Kaseya says the target is to ensure that 60- percent of vaccines used in Africa must be manufactured on the Continent by 2030.
He was speaking during the opening ceremony of the 3rd annual International Conference for Public Health in Africa in Lusaka on Monday.
Meanwhile World Health Organisation Director General Tedros Ghebreyesus said building resilient health systems at Continental level is significant.
And Health Minister Sylvia Masebo urged the delegates to create collaborative networks to share best practices to champion public health.
Speaking at the same event CPHIA 2023 Co- Chair Professor Senait Fisseha called for relentless investment in the new public Health order for Africa.
